Different Types of Uncut Diamond Polki: A Comprehensive Overview

Polki diamonds are a specific type of diamond used in traditional Indian jewellery. The term "polki" refers to uncut or raw diamonds that are used in their natural form without any additional faceting. These diamonds retain their natural shape and are often characterized by a slightly rough and rustic appearance.

Polki diamonds are traditionally set in gold or silver jewellery, particularly in kundan and polki jewellery styles. The diamonds are typically backed with silver foil and set using a technique called "Kundan Setting." It involves encrusting the diamonds onto a gold or silver base using lac or wax and adding intricate details with enamel work, gemstones, and other decorative elements.

Polki diamonds are known for their unique charm and vintage appeal. They often have a larger face size analogized to faceted diamonds, allowing them to reflect light differently and create a distinct sparkle. Due to their raw and uncut nature, each polki diamond is unique in shape, size, and characteristics.

It's worth noting that polki diamonds should not be confused with "Polished" diamonds, which undergo a cutting and faceting process to enhance their brilliance and sparkle. On the other hand, Polki diamonds are prized for their natural and untouched beauty, making them a sought-after choice in traditional bridal polki jewellery.

Here are three types of uncut polki diamonds :-

1. Kilwas Polki -

This type of polki diamond features a flat bottom and a dome-shaped top in bright and white color. They are thin in thickness and may include some impurities like blurry lines and black spots. These pokies are known for their simplicity and are often used in contemporary Polki jewellery. Kilwas polki comes in two types:-

  • Filling Kilwas Polki - This kind of kilwas polki has coated with a chemical layer to hide or reduce the impurity. It is like having makeup on polki to make it look rich.

This chemical filling may wear off in two-four years and have to refill for the same look.

  • Non-filling Kilwas Polki - This kind of kilwas polki has no chemical filling these are in a natural form with some impurities. They are a little dark in color.

Some other types of uncut diamonds are :-

LB Polki (Lightly Black) -

LC Polki (Lightly Cream) -

CVD Polki (Chemical Vapor Deposition) -

CVD polki are synthetic diamonds used instead of natural, uncut diamonds in jewellery. These diamonds are lab grown and created in a lab and have similar look and properties to natural diamonds, but are less expensive. CVD uncut diamonds are often used in polki and kundan jewellery, where the raw and natural look of uncut diamonds is desired.
